The Genius of Integrating a Meditative Practice in your Creative Process: A Music Producer’s Perspective.

Creating Music is an escape from the outside world and its noises, and it’s, in my opinion, one of the most beautiful ways to express yourself. But life in the studio is far from a fairy tale, from all the technical issues that arise to the dreaded writer’s block. Music producers, songwriters, and, I believe, all creatives face numerous challenges that limit their creativity and, as a result, their productivity.

As someone who has spent over a decade working professionally as a creative, I have found a practical way to dramatically improve those situations. Integrating a meditative practice into your routine will have a profound impact on your work. But let’s take all the mumbo-jumbo out of the equation and focus on the practical and scientific aspects of these practices.

A study by Harvard Medical School found that a daily meditation practice reduces stress levels, improves sleep, and boosts your immune system. That alone will help your daily process of getting in the flow zone and creating your best work. The National Institutes of Health also conducted a study that shows that regular meditation improves focus and concentration, reduces anxiety and depression, and even restructures brain functions. These findings clearly show us that a consistent meditative practice can provide tangible results and benefits in your life and work routine.

How would you start from scratch? It's very simple; just set aside a few minutes every day. I would recommend doing this before the start of each work session, but you can also take a break during your workday to dedicate some time for meditation. The key is consistency; once you decide on a specific moment and time, you should stick to the routine to establish a positive pattern.

Another very important aspect to integrate with meditation is keeping a peaceful and organized environment, which will improve the potency of this process. A cluttered and chaotic workspace is a major source of distraction, as opposed to a clean and organized studio with a pleasant atmosphere that promotes a sense of calm and clarity. Aromatherapy and natural incense further enhance the experience and encourage a meditative state of mind.

Now you might be thinking, "That’s cool, but how will that translate into results in my actual work?" Valid question, As a musician, it enables me to approach each day and task with a clear mind that is free of distracting thoughts. To be clear, it is not a miracle quick fix solution, and it took me some time to adapt and really stick to the routine, but I would never go back because it has greatly increased my productivity. When I mix a song, for example, I’m now always starting from a place of calm and focus, which really allows me to hear greater levels of detail and have more precision in the details of mixing.

Whether you work from home or have a large studio, I firmly advise you to set up a small space with your favorite calming items, an essential oil diffuser, or some incense sticks and begin devoting a few minutes each day to your inner wellbeing. Your art will benefit from this.
